This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Listen to Sharine Wittkopp about how you have been predisposed to the effects of air pollution.
Sharine Wittkopp is an MD/PhD student who researches connection between traffic pollution and cardiovascular health. She brings a background in Biochemistry to approach this human health problem from a mechanistic perspective. Her goal is to increase our understanding of how our genes shape our responses to environmental pollution. Sharine majored in Chemistry at Bryn Mawr College with a minor in Mathematics. She has a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences from UCI with experience in mitochondrial biochemistry, and recently successfully defended her dissertation research in Environmental Toxicology. She received the UC Irvine Graduate Division/Stanley Behrens Public Impact Fellowship for her work. She is currently finishing her medical school training after which she will continue in a residency program, which will allow her to both treat patients and research the environmental determinants of cardiovascular disease.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
