Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony and declared the opening of the 14th National Games on Wednesday evening in Xi’an City of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.

The quadrennial Games, dubbed as the "mini-Olympics," is the highest level of comprehensive sports event in China.

Stepping onto the rostrum with his wife Peng Liyuan by his side at 19:58, President Xi waved to a cheering and applauding crowd at the stadium.

At 20:00 the ceremony began with flag bearers carrying the national flag into the stadium as the song "Ode to the Motherland" played in the background.

After the national flag was raised and opening addresses were delivered by officials of Shaanxi and the General Administration of Sport, President Xi announced the National Games officially opened at 20:40.

This year’s sporting event, which has been China’s only National Games so far held in the same year as the Olympics, runs from Sept 15 to 27. It features a total of 54 sports and 595 events. Among them, 35 sports and 410 events are set for the elite athletes, while the remainder is for the grassroots.

More than 12,000 athletes are set to compete in the finals stage of the Games.

19时58分，习近平主席带着夫人彭丽媛走上主席台，向场内欢呼鼓掌的人群挥手致意。

20:00，仪式开始，旗手高举国旗进入体育场，背景音乐响起《祖国颂》。

20时40分，陕西省和国家体育总局官员升国旗、致开幕词后，习主席宣布全运会正式开幕。

今年的体育赛事是中国迄今为止唯一一届与奥运会同年举办的全运会，于9月15日至27日举行，共有54个体育项目和595个项目。其中，35个体育项目、410个项目为精英运动员设置，其余为基层运动员。

超过12,000名运动员将参加全运会的决赛阶段。
