Should the government help pay for electric bikes? We think so.
In this video we discuss the recently proposed Electric Bicycle Incentive Kickstart for the Environment (E-BIKE) Act, which encourages the use of eBikes through a consumer tax credit. Introduced by Congressman Jimmy Panetta (D-Carmel Valley) and Congressional Bike Caucus Chairman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) in February, the E-BIKE Act would create a consumer tax credit that:
- Covers 30% of the cost of the ebike, up to a $1,500 credit
- Applies to new electric bicycles that cost less than $8,000
- Is fully refundable, allowing lower-income workers to claim the credit
We spoke with several human-scale transportation advocates, from PeopleForBikes Federal Affairs Manager Noa Banayan, who played a huge role in bringing the E-BIKE Act to members of congress, to several of our customers who have experienced firsthand how eBikes have changed lives for the better.
If you’d like to get involved, encourage your representative to sponsor the E-BIKE Act by sending them this letter from PeopleForBikes: https://action.peopleforbikes.org/bcaandebikeact/.
A special thanks to PeopleForBikes Federal Affairs Manager Noa Banayan; Christian Kurpiel Wakamiya, and his two kids Ashton and Kikue; Maddy and Jeff Novich (follow Maddy on Instagram @cargobikemomma); and Chris Sanders for helping us with this video.
