Ethics and self-interest are the main reasons why rich nations should help the poor, explains David Hulme, professor at the University of Manchester.
Hulme argues that granting foreign aid used to be the main approach to international development, but it’s declining in significance. So we need to put aid in perspective. That is, not only conventional foreign aid but trade, finance and environmental policy reform, or joined-up policies, must be considered the way forward.
