I purchased this tree from a reputable nursery (Champa in SoCal) a few years ago, and it’s finally producing some fruit. It was allegedly a grafted Ross Sapote, but I was lazy and didn’t remember to look for the graft. 2 years later, it finally produces fruit and we were so excited about that but the fruit doesn’t look like what Ross fruits should look like, but also slightly different than canistel. I’m suspecting that someone planted a bunch of seeds of actual Ross fruits and those seedlings are now exhibiting signs of the parentage of Canistel.
So even though we were disappointed it’s not a true "Ross", we taste the fruit and see how it compares to regular canistel (Pouteria campechiana), and if it’s "better and more moist" than canistel, which is one of the big perks of the Pouteria sp. ‘Ross’.
Side note, this is tree that is prolifically flowering and fruiting in a 10 gallon container. Our trees in the grown flower like mad but never produce fruit, so either way, this one is a winner!
