One of the world’s most famous Kings or monarchs is Henry VIII, the Tudor King of England who had 6 wives, two of which were executed at the Tower of London. Henry VIII is remembered for being a brutal and tyrannical King, but his bloodshed went much further than just executing Queens and some of his closest advisors. But how many people did Henry VIII execute?
It’s been estimated that during his almost 4 decade long reign as King, that up to 70,000 people inside his Kingdom were executed for various difference reasons. That equates to roughly 3% of the population of England were executed for different reasons. The most common reasons why people were executed was committing crimes as Treason, (plotting to kill the King or speaking bad about him) disagreeing with religious changes and also serious crimes such as murder.
Today we remember Henry VIII for the executions of his wives such as Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, but he even ordered the deaths of some of his closest friends such as Thomas Cromwell and Sir Thomas More. But many of the most famous priests and bishops were also killed too.
