The fall of 2020 saw the latest escalation of an unresolved conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan defeated Armenia after six weeks of fighting. Thousands of soldiers died, while the precise number of civilian casualties is still not known.
International observers said both sides committed war crimes. Armenian director Aram Shahbazyan was on the ground as the conflict escalated, filming frontline footage and talking to people in the region - while himself experiencing bombing raids at firsthand.
Following a ceasefire brokered by Russia, Armenia had to vacate a range of areas in the region. The film team were witness to villagers burning down their own homes and removing historic ornaments and objects from monasteries rather than leave them to the Azerbaijanis. Nagorno-Karabakh has been a contested region between the two countries for over a century. In the 1990s the First Nagorno-Karabakh War saw the Armenian army emerge victorious, and several hundred thousand Azerbaijanis expelled.
