U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated his government’s call for an unconditional ceasefire as a conflict between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan-led forces rages on.
Blinken made the comments in Nairobi, Kenya, during the first leg of an African trip that will also take him to Nigeria and Senegal.
Blinken said there is still time for a ceasefire to succeed in Ethiopia’s year-old war, and said the U.S. is deeply concerned the conflict could spill over into the Horn of Africa.
He also urged Tigrayan-led forces to stop their threatened advance on the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa, where the African Union is headquartered.
The U.S. has advised Americans to leave the country and Blinken says the United States will reduce embassy staff to essential personnel.
